Header Tom Allen

Thomas Michael Allen has established a reputation for his vivid representations of a wide range of operatic roles, especially in leading bel canto parts and in haute contre roles of the French baroque. He was born in Chicago and began his musical studies as a pianist.  After earning a degree in English literature he received a Master’s Degree in voice from the Manhattan School of Music in New York.  Together with pianist Reinild Mees he has given many recitals in Germany and the Netherlands.

 

In opera Thomas Michael Allen has sung at many of the leading opera houses in Europe, including the Théatre des Champs-Élyées in Paris, Zurich Opera, Staatsoper Berlin, de Nederlandse Opera Amsterdam, La Monnaie in Brussels, Grand Théatre de Genève, Opera de Lyon, and the Stuttgart Opera.  He has worked with prominent directors including Robert Carsen, David McVicar, Laurent Pelly,  Pierre Audi, Nigel Lowrey, Dieter Dorn and Graham Vick. As an orchestral soloist he has sung with such orchestras as the Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, the Academy for Ancient Music, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Les Musiciens du Louvre and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig with conductors Kurt Masur, Michael Gielen, Simone Young, Gary Bertini, Julia Jones, William Christie, Marc Minkowski, René Jacobs and Helmut Rilling.  He has a wide and varied concert repertoire and has earned a reputation as one of the most sought-after Evangelists in the Passions of Bach.

 

As a recording artist, Thomas Michael Allen can be heard on various CD and DVD recordings of works by Bach, Brahms, Galuppi, Mozart, Torri und ter Veldhuis. His most recent release is Purcell Divine Hymns with William Christie and Les Arts Florissants for EMI/Virgin Classics, other noteworthy recordings are Mozarts Gedächnis Feyer for ORF, and a critically acclaimed DVD world premiere of Jacob ter Veldhuis’s Paradiso for Chandos.  Scheduled for upcoming release is a live DVD of Handel’s Semele from the Zurich Opera with Cecilia Bartoli, conducted by William Christie.
